Municipal Charities of Stratford-upon-Avon

A charity with a long tradition, based in Stratford upon Avon,

providing supported housing and financial assistance for local people

The Mary Newland's Almshouses

This charity provides a group of four Grade 2 listed cottages near to the town centre.   Each cottage comprises a living room and newly-fitted kitchen on the ground floor with a bedroom and bathroom on the first floor.   Each property has a small garden area and there is an on-site laundry room with washing machine and tumble drier.

The Mary Newland's Almshouses provide low-cost accommodation for needy, elderly people from the Town of Stratford-upon-Avon.   As with our other properties, there are certain restrictions laid down in the Governing Deed, details of which will be provided to applicants.

One of our previous residents, who worked as a part-time guide at Shakespeare's Birthplace, acquired this photograph of the almshouses taken around the turn of the 20th Century.  Such a pity the avenue of trees are  no longer there.  At some stage in the future, the trustees hope to reinstate the ornamental railings on the front walls; these were removed to help with the first world war effort and never replaced.

Thanks to generous grants from the Stratford upon Avon Town Trust and the Baron Davenport's Charity, a considerable amount of the external stonework on the front aspect has recently been replaced.  Prior to the work being carried out, they were looking rather neglected but they look stunning now after their make-over.
